My Favorite Album: LØLØ Loves American Idiot

Green Day

American Idiot (Reprise)

Alt-rock "It-girl" LØLØ told us about her love for a Green Day classic.

LØLØ: If you know me, you know my favorite album of all time is American Idiot by Green Day. They say you never forget your first, and I guess that’s true because it was the very first CD I ever bought and picked out myself (with all my hard-earned cash I got by charging my parents $2 to watch me perform Hilary Duff songs in the basement). I’m not even sure I knew what I was buying at the time. I probably just saw the big red heart on the cover and thought, “That’s so pretty and cute, this will be just like my Hilary Duff CD.” Turns out it was not like Hilary Duff…. AT ALL, but picking out that CD changed my life forever. It rewired my brain and sculpted me into the artist I am today.

It’s not just an album, it feels like a full-on story. A crazy world I get to step into for nine songs straight. Even as a kid, when I didn’t understand all of the themes, I could feel the energy bursting through. I’ll never forget hearing “She’s a Rebel,” and when Billie Joe shouts out Toronto, I was sure the whole album must’ve been written about me (because that definitely made sense!) I wasn’t exactly a rebel (In fact, I was a total nerd), but at that moment, I felt like one. Green Day gave me my first little rockstar moment, and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.

American Idiot blends raw energy with full-on theatrical storytelling. I’m a theater kid at heart, and I love being dramatic in my own writing, so this album was basically the blueprint. It’s emotional and satirical at the same time, and I love that. It taught me that music can be both a statement and an escape, both passionate and messy. And that’s why it will always be my forever favorite album.

LØLØ's single "american zombie" is out now.
