Ahead of tour dates in Latin America and the UK, Karen Dió has something to say about people who need to give their two cents on the short yet hellraising punk single, “Cut Your Hair.”
Dió’s fearless and confrontational songwriting has become one of the main aspects of what draws listeners to her music time and time again. Which is why it should come as no surprise that her latest single similarly finds her hitting back at critics with a one-two punch of a track, this time directed at those who’ve spoken about her hair.
“I used to get A LOT of comments from people online telling me ‘They like me more with long hair,’ which I think is bizarre,” said Dió, “I forget how invasive and superficial people can be! So I wrote ‘Cut Your Hair’ as my final response to all of them. ‘If you don’t like me with my short hair, then you don’t like me at all.’”
As if the classic guitar riffs and relentless drums weren’t already any indication, Dió’s vocal style and lyrics evoke the classic era of pop-punk rockers like Joan Jett. Coming in at a little over two minutes, Dió doesn’t waste her time, unleashing her onslaught with an increasing sense of frustration brought about by the subject matter.
By the time “Cut Your Hair” wraps up, you’ll be reminded of Dió’s understanding of what makes punk a fun yet punchy genre that’s unafraid to call things out and say it like it is.
