In Focus: Phantogram at District Music Hall

Upstate New York natives Phantogram brought their tour to District Music Hall in Norwalk, CT on Wednesday, September 10 on the heels of releasing their latest single “In My Head” earlier this month and full album Memory of a Day October 2024….and being fresh off of supporting a leg of Deftones’ current tour. While traveling through colors Phantogram allured the audience with an ethereal performance .

The duo, composed of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, began with roots in Greenwich, NY spending a couple of years playing local shows in the Capital District before working on releasing their debut EP in 2009. Their band’s name Phantogram fits their music perfectly, and particularly, their live show. It was an amalgamation of atmosphere and music in a dream-like flow.

Phantogram’s set was a mix of songs from their catalog setting a few fan favorites such as “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore,” “When I’m Small,” and “Black Out Days” amongst the canvas of the show. The audience seemed refreshingly engaged with the performance; captivated by Barthel’s dreamy vocal melodies, Carter’s guitar grit, and the lively kinetics of the two on stage.

Between the writing behind the songs, performance, and atmospheric lighting design, Phantogram not only crafted an experience of being lost in time with the music but also created an innate feeling of the ability to disconnect from the real world to be in the moment, ultimately leaving the audience longing for more than the window of a weeknight performance allows.
