The Humboldt Forum in Berlin will tighten its security after two violent clashes near the cultural complex left one man dead and several others injured, the German-language news outlet Monopol reports.
“For special, larger events, the foundation will deploy additional security personnel to ensure an orderly and safe process for all visitors,” a spokeswoman said, adding that further measures are being discussed.
The most recent incident took place Friday evening, when a group of about 15 people attacked three others near the museum. A 20-year-old man, identified in multiple reports as Syrian, was stabbed several times and later died of his injuries.
Nearly three weeks earlier, a knife fight between two groups at the same location left six men injured, including a 24-year-old who required emergency surgery, according to the Berliner.
The Humboldt Forum stressed that the attacks were not directly related to the institution itself, but said it was taking the situation “very seriously” and was coordinating with police, local authorities, and neighborhood partners.
“The Humboldt Forum sees itself as a lively and open urban quarter. The public space at and in the Humboldt Forum should remain safe, open, and attractive for everyone,” the spokeswoman said. Located on Museum Island, one of Berlin’s most visited destinations, the Forum houses the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art.
